"The intention of mantra is to maintain mental stillness through repetition of a significant spiritual phrase. For example; to repeat the phrase “Om” during a meditative practice will give the mind a single object to focus on and remain held in place; free from wandering. The stilled mind brought about by this focus, acts as a bridge to the pure formless awareness that can only be accessed now. If a thought does arise in awareness as the “Om” mantra is happening, the thought will inevitably dissolve or be replaced with the “Om” sound. Naturally, the mantra becomes a tool of dissolution, used to access the underlying union of all things. “Om” is just one phrase among an infinite number of possible phrases that can be spoken out loud, or silently to oneself in the form of thought."
